Measuring industrial temperature

BUILT AROUND
YOUR PROCESS

TYPE J 0°C to 750°C
TYPE K 0°C to 1100°C
TYPE T −200°C to 300°C
PT100 −70°C to 500°C

Available temperature range depends on the complete sensor, cable and termination construction.

Hotset UK manufactures both thermocouples and PT100 resistance sensors for industrial temperature measurement and control.

Thermocouples generate a small thermoelectric voltage, while PT100 sensors measure the predictable change in resistance of a platinum sensing element. Each requires a compatible instrument input.

Our sensors are available in a variety of probe, cable, fitting and termination arrangements, including bespoke products manufactured from drawings or existing samples.

Need a replacement sensor?

Send us the sensor type, probe dimensions, fitting details, cable length and termination arrangement. For PT100 sensors, also tell us whether a two-, three- or four-wire connection is required.

Configure a
thermocouple

Choose a sensor family and work through the available engineering options. The configurator records your selections and creates a complete Hotset part number for your enquiry.

The sensor families shown represent our most commonly specified range. We also manufacture bespoke thermocouples to customer samples or supplied drawings.

Temperature-sensing options

DESIGNED FOR THE MEASURING POINT

The correct sensor depends upon the required temperature range, response time, atmosphere, electrical environment and method of installation.

Type J thermocouples

A widely used and economical thermocouple type for general industrial and plastics-processing applications.

Type K thermocouples

A versatile general-purpose thermocouple type with broad industrial application.

Type T thermocouples

A stable thermocouple type particularly suited to lower-temperature and sub-zero measurement applications.

PT100 resistance sensors

Platinum resistance sensors offering good accuracy, repeatability and stability for industrial temperature measurement.

Bespoke probes

Probe diameter, length, sheath, sensing-tip and mounting arrangement can be selected around the installation.

Replacement manufacture

Existing specifications, drawings and samples can help us manufacture replacement sensors.

Construction options

THE COMPLETE
SENSOR MATTERS

Sensor type is only one part of the specification. Probe construction, measuring arrangement, mounting, cable and termination all affect the finished sensor.

Sensor type

Type J, Type K, Type T, another thermocouple type or PT100, selected for the required performance and environment.

Thermocouple junction

Grounded, isolated or exposed junction construction can be selected according to response, protection and electrical isolation.

PT100 wiring

Two-, three- or four-wire construction can be selected according to the instrument, cable length and required measurement accuracy.

Probe dimensions

Diameter and insertion length are selected to position the measuring junction correctly within the application.

Mounting arrangement

Threads, bayonet fittings, flanges, brackets and other mounting arrangements can be considered.

Cable insulation

Cable construction is selected according to temperature, flexibility, abrasion, moisture and environmental conditions.

Cable protection

Braiding, flexible conduit and other protection may be used where the cable is exposed to mechanical damage.

Termination

Plugs, sockets, terminal heads and free-tail arrangements can be selected to suit the instrument connection.

Typical applications

WHERE THEY ARE USED

Thermocouples and PT100 sensors provide temperature feedback for monitoring, indication and automatic process control.

Plastics processing

Measuring barrel, nozzle, die and moulding-machine temperatures.

Packaging machinery

Temperature feedback from sealing bars, jaws and heated machine components.

Tools and dies

Measuring temperature within moulds, platens and production tooling.

Process equipment

Monitoring the temperature of industrial machinery, vessels, pipes and specialist equipment.

Installation matters

MEASURE IN THE
RIGHT PLACE

Even a correctly manufactured temperature sensor can provide an unrepresentative reading if its sensing point is poorly positioned or the probe does not have sufficient contact or insertion depth.

Position the sensing point

The thermocouple junction or PT100 element must be located where it represents the temperature the process needs to control.

Protect the sensor cable

Route the cable away from excessive heat, sharp edges, moving machinery and high-power electrical wiring.

Match the instrument

The controller or indicator must be configured for the correct thermocouple type or PT100 connection. Thermocouple polarity must also remain correct.

Preparing an enquiry

What do we
need to know?

These details help us select the sensor technology, materials, construction, mounting and termination arrangement.

Sensor selection

J, K, T OR PT100?

Sensor type, measuring principle, construction and cable materials should be selected around the complete application rather than temperature alone.
